Sharjah Architecture: Punching above its weight

Since the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Sharjah has developed a public architecture of a strongly Islamic character under the guiding hand of HH the Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi. The first part of Peter Jackson’s presentation will consider the stitching together of the city through traditional Islamic forms, in forming Sharjah’s distinctive urban identity. The second part will focus on recent conservation projects and striking new museums, educational interpretive centres, and other civic buildings that the Ruler has commissioned across the Emirate.

The session will include:

  • an interview with Peter Jackson, FRIBA, on his career, hosted by Azlina Bulmer, RIBA Director of International
  • a presentation by Peter Jackson, FRIBA, on recent Sharjah Architecture in the United Arab Emirates
  • a chance to interact with Peter through the audience Q&A session
